llensburg, WA—The Brigham Young
University Hawaii men’s basketball team defeated second-seeded Cal
State-Dominguez Hills today 83-76 in the opening round of the NCAA II
West Regional Tournament. The Seasiders, seeded seventh in the
tournament, advanced to tomorrow’s second round with the win and avenged
a season-opening, 81-54 loss at Cal State-Dominguez Hills. BYU-Hawaii
is now 18-8 for the year.
Pacific West Conference Player of the Year Marques Whippy scored 31
points, 18 of them in the first half to stake the Seasiders to a 43-36
lead, and pulled down eight rebounds to go with three blocked shots to
lead the Seasiders. Jet Chang and Heath Gameren each tallied 12 and
Rory Patterson added ten for BYU-Hawaii. Gameren handed out seven
assists for the Seasiders in the win.
Michael Cox and Zreh Zargayan each had 14 points to lead Cal
State-Dominguez Hills, as the Toros finished the season with a 23-7
record.
The Seasiders will face sixth-seeded Alaska-Anchorage tomorrow at 5:00 pm in the regional semifinal.
