he Orlando Magic have agreed to sign free-agent big man Jason Smith to a one-year, $4.3 million contract, according to Shams Charania of Real GM. Smith's agency has confirmed the news.
Smith should provide the Magic with more depth in the frontcourt behind Nikola Vucevic and replace Kyle O'Quinn, who departed for New York. He will compete with Channing Frye for backup minutes.
Smith is a perimeter-shooting big man that has struggled with injuries during his career. He has a nice mid-range jumper, but doesn't have too many other significant NBA skills. He averaged eight points in 22 minutes per game with the Knicks last season while playing in all 82 games for the first time in his career. New York deemed him expendable after agreeing to deals with Robin Lopez and O'Quinn.
Smith will also give Orlando a veteran presence, along with fellow signee C.J. Watson. He likely won't play much as Orlando shifts to a youth movement, but nevertheless has value in fill-in situations
