Thabo Sefolosha, a 5½-year starting shooting guard for the Oklahoma City Thunder, will sign a three-year contract worth $12 million with the Atlanta Hawks, a person with knowledge of the agreement told USA TODAY Sports.
The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the contract, which cannot be signed until July 10 because of the NBA's free agency moratorium.
HAWKS: Send Williams to Raptors
THUNDER: Add Telfair from China
The deal comes after Sefolosha, a defensive specialist, struggled in the playoffs and was benched by Thunder coach Scott Brooks. The Hawks needed defensive help on the wings, and the 6-5 Swiss guard has the wingspan and athleticism to cover small forwards, as well.
He'll join Kyle Korver and DeMarre Carroll in the rotation for a team with an overload of power forwards but not much on the wings. The Hawks traded sixth man guard Louis Williams to the Toronto Raptors and lost free agent swingman Cartier Martin to the Detroit Pistons this week.
Sefolosha's three-point shooting percentage dropped from 42.2% over the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons to 31.6% last season, then 26.1% in the playoffs. He struggled with injuries toward the end of the year, and his offensive role has always been limited by playing next to Thunder stars Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.
The No. 13 pick in the 2006 NBA draft has career averages of 5.8 points and 3.7 rebounds a game and began his career with the Chicago Bulls.
Real GM reported the agreement first.
