Seasiders Stop Chargers
Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team overcame a sluggish start to defeat Hillsdale College (MI) tonight, 80-63, to improve to 6-1 for the season. The 12th-ranked Seasiders trailed by seven three different times in the first half and were down 25-18 with under eight minutes to play in the opening period before closing the half with an 18-5 run to go into the break with a 36-30 lead and never trailed again.
The Seasiders, who were out-rebounded 18-17 in the first half, hit the boards with a vengeance in the second half and used a 24-8 rebound advantage in the half to pull away from the Chargers. BYU–Hawaii scored the first five points of the second period to go up by eleven points, and after the teams exchanged three-pointers the Seasiders held a double-digit margin the rest of the game.
Senior guard Nathan Sims grabbed fourteen rebounds, eight of them on the offensive glass and 11 of them in the second half to lead the resurgence on the boards. He also scored 16 points on 5-9 shooting from the floor. Junior Lucas Alves tallied 19 points to lead all scorers and was a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line. Alves also added eight rebounds. Junior guard J.R. Buensuceso hit 3-5 from beyond the arc and scored 14 points as well as handing out a game-high four assists for the Seasiders. Freshman Jet Chang also scored 14 points for BYU–Hawaii. Senior Jermaine Odjegba grabbed six rebounds to go with five points and three steals in the win and Marques Whippy added six points and four rebounds for the Seasiders.
